How to remove slate [?] tiles from a timber floor?

We have what may be slate tiles which we suspect were laid directly onto a
honeycakes
timber floor. There is nothing to indicate that any cement or other

sheeting was placed b/w the timber and the tiles.

We do not

many of the tiles move/rock when stepped on.

The tiles need to

be lifted, preferably without damaging the timber underneath (which we
wanna stain & polish) and hopefully without having to smash up the
tiles. We might be able to use them elsewhere.

The grouting or
cement between the tiles is not exactly top quality, so we can chisel or
drill that out without too much trouble, we hope!

What is a
good technique for a) lifting the tiles and b) removing any underlying
adhesive from the timber?

Many thanks,

If it was laid right on the flooring & you say they rock an

move now, then you won t have any problem taking the tiles ( slate) up.

them & thats why it failing) you ll have tohand sprape the glue off as
much as possible. You need to use a floor sander to sand the flooring
down so any small nicks won t matter, just be carefull of coarse. Scrape
with the lengths of wood . DONT use a grinder, if a cement based glue was
used the dust factor will be HUGE & you ll be cleaning dust all over the
house for months.. Any flooring questions you can e mail me through my
